Are you waiting for a new Government in your state?
On April 6th, 2021, it’s your day to choose your Government in Tamil Nadu. It’s Election Day, so let's learn a few basics related to elections, along with your voting rights and procedures.
Who conducts elections in India?
The Election Commission of India conducts elections in a free and fair manner. Do you know what is meant by democracy and the importance of voting?
Democracy is a form of government that allows people to choose their rulers through the system of voting, like in India, the USA, and France for example.
A vote is a formal choice in an election, to choose your own representative in the Government.
All the democratic countries (including India) have guaranteed a political right to all citizens.
The Right to Vote
Voting in India is a legal right, given by the Representation of People Act, 1950.
Who has the voting rights in India?
Every Indian citizen has the right to vote when they reach 18 years of age (based on universal adult suffrage), irrespective of caste, religion, gender, or economic status.
-
The party which gets the most number of MLAs (Member of the Legislative Assembly) is declared as the majority party.
-
The Governor calls the leader of the majority party to form the state government.
If the people in a democratic country are not willing to elect any candidate, they can vote for the option called NOTA (None Of The Above).
Voters Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is the way forward to enhance the credibility and transparency of the election process. The VVPAT is an independent printer system attached to an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) which allows the voters to check if their votes are cast correctly. It generates a paper slip every time a voter casts his or her vote, recording the party to whom the vote was cast. The VVPAT slip is kept in a sealed cover.
You make the Government more responsible and accountable to the people only through voting.
Use your vote wisely today for a better tomorrow!
