Book Free DemoIn grammar, a sentence is the basic grammatical unit. It contains a group of words and expresses a complete thought. A sentence consists of a subject and a predicate. For example, in the sentence "Tagore writes good poems" Tagore is the subject of the sentence and writes good poems is the predicate.
There are six basic or simple sentence patterns:
- Subject/Predicate, Action Verb
- Subject/Predicate, Action Verb/Direct Object
- Subject/Predicate, Action Verb/Adverb
- Subject/Predicate, Linking Verb/Predicate Nominative
- Subject/Predicate, Linking Verb/Predicate Adjective
- Subject/Predicate, Action Verb/Indirect Object/Direct Object
Examples of the six basic sentence types:
1. Subject/Predicate, Action Verb:
- The hall laughed. (hall-subject, laughed- action verb).
- The orator and the audience laughed. (orator and the audience- subject, laughed-action verb).
- The students sat and read. (students- subject, read- action verb).

2. Subject/Predicate, Action Verb/Direct Object:

- The class took an exam. (class- subject, exam- direct object).
- The class took an exam and elocution. (class- subject, exam and elocution- direct object).
- The board took a decision. (board- subject, decision- action verb).
3. Subject/Predicate, Action Verb/Adverb:
- The class worked carefully. (class- subject, worked- action verb, carefully- adverb ).
- The students sit here. (students- subject, sit here- action verb ).
- The class worked as a team. (class- subject, team- adverb).

4. Subject/Predicate, Linking Verb/Predicate Nominative:

- The teacher is Mr Arun. (teacher- subject, Mr.Arun- Predicate nominative).
- The teachers are Mr Arun and Ms Lina. (teacher- subject, Mr. Arun and Ms.Lina - Predicate nominative).
- The principal is Mr Rao. (principal- subject, Mr.Rao- Predicate nominative).
5. Subject/Predicate, Linking Verb/Predicate Adjective:
Example:
- The teacher is honest. (teacher- subject, honest- Predicate adjective).
- Ms Kanna is kind and helpful. (Ms.Kanna- subject, kind and helpful-Predicate adjective).
- Ms Reena is beautiful. (Ms.Reena- subject, beautiful-Predicate adjective).
Example:
- The teacher gave the class a test. (teacher- subject, gave- verb, class- direct object, test- indirect object).
- Mr Sitaram gave Kaky and Jonathan a test. (Mr. Sitaram- subject, gave- verb, Kaky and Jonathan- direct object, test- indirect object).
- Ishu reads a chapter in her book each night. (Ishu- subject, reads- verb, book- direct object, each night- indirect object).
