Why are some substances biodegradable and some non-biodegradable?
a. Non-biodegradable wastes can be naturally broken down, decomposed and disposed of by saprophytes or decomposers. Biodegradable wastes are those that decomposers cannot break down due to a lack of enzymes.
b. The microorganisms secrete enzymes that solubilize or degrades the waste to simpler substances.
c. Biodegradable materials are difficult to remove because they do not decompose and emit toxic gases when burned.
