  1. Take the cardboard tray from inside a discarded matchbox.
  2. Wrap an electric wire a few times around the cardboard tray.
  3. Place a small compass needle inside it.
  4. Now connect the free ends of this wire to an electric cell through a switch as shown in figure.
  5. Note the direction in which the compass needle is pointing.
  6. Bring a bar magnet near the compass needle.
  7. Observe what happens.
  8. Now, move the switch to the ‘ON’ position and observe.
  9. Move the switch back to the ‘OFF’ position.
  10. Repeat the experiment a few times.

What does this experiment indicate?
 
When the bar magnet is kept near the needle while the switch is in the off position, there is in the needle. Whereas when it is brought near the needle when the switch is turned on, the needle shows . The wire behaves like a through it. This is known as the effect of the electric current.
