Water-logged soil produces less nitrogenoxygencarbon for plants to respirate and affects their growth.

The primary function of rootsstemsleaves includes water absorption and uptake of oxygen from the pore space of the soil.

In ordinary soil, oxygen from the pore spaces moves into the leavesstemsroots.​

However, water occupies the movesspacesforces between soil particles and pushes the nitrogenoxygencarbon out into the atmosphere in water-logged soil. 

So, continuously water-logged soils are disadvantageous for plantrootsstems growth.
