Uncovered drains may become blocked with solid wasteliquid wastegas waste, such as rags, stones, and plastic bags. The flooded drains produce river waterrain waterdirty water that stagnates and is polluted, emitting a foul smell and providing breeding grounds for various microbes. Mosquitoes lay eggs and breed, causing the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue. Sewage wastes also carry germs that cause serious waterborne diseases like sneezescoughscholera, typhoid, dysentery, and jaundice.
