When a material undergoes a chemical change or reaction, the chemical property is a trait or activity that can be observed. Chemical properties may be detected during or after the reaction since the arrangement of atoms inside a sample must be disrupted to analyse the property.

Let us see some of the physical properties of Non-metals:

Reaction with Oxygen:

Non-metals react with oxygen to form oxides.

Reaction with Water:

Non-metals do not react with water, but they are very reactive in air.

$\begin{array}{l} Non - metal + Water \to No reaction \\ N + H_{2} O \to No reaction \end{array}$

Reaction with Acid:

Non-metals on reaction with acid

Non-metals do not react with dilute mineral acids but react with conc. sulphuric acids.

$\begin{array}{l} Non - metal + Acid \to No reaction \\ S + HCl \to No reaction \end{array}$

Reaction with Base:

Non-metals react with bases to form salt and water.

$\begin{array}{l} Non - metal + Base \to Salt + Water \\ {{Cl}_{2} + Ca (OH)}_{2} \to Ca (OCl) Cl + H_{2} O \end{array}$

Displacement reaction: More reactive non-metal replaces a less reactive non-metal from its compound.

$\begin{array}{l} More reactive non - metal + less reactive non - metal compound \to More reactive non - metal compound + Less reactive non - metal \\ {Cl}_{2} + 2 KBr \to 2KCl + {Br}_{2} \end{array}$
