In the previous chapter, we learnt how animals reproduce and the different modes of reproduction. After attaining a particular age or a period, animals, including humans, can reproduce. The hormones are responsible for bringing about changes that transform a child into an adult.
A young human under complete physical development is called a child.
The child then grows and develops into anadult. When a child crosses the age of \(11\), there is a sudden spurt in their body growth that becomes visible.
Important!
Changes that take place in the body are part of growth and development.

What is adolescence?
The physical and intellectual maturity of a human is called an adult.
- The transition period between childhood and adulthood, of both physical and mental development, is called adolescence.
- It can also be defined as,
Adolescence is the period of life when the body changes, which leads to reproductive maturity.
The changes in boys include:
- Growth of facial and body hair.
- Deepening of voice.
- Production of sperms by the testes.
The changes in girls include,
- The growth and development of mammary glands (breast).
- Ovaries start to release eggs, and menstruation commences.
- The growth of hairs in armpits and in pubic regions.
Adolescence begins at the age of \(10\) or \(11\) and lasts up to the age of \(18\) or \(19\) years. The adolescence period ranges and varies in different humans. In girls, it may start a year or two earlier than in boys.
This period covers the teens \(13\) to \(19\) years, so adolescence is also called teenagers.
Human development stages: Top - Girl to Adult: Bottom - Boy to Adult
The human body undergoes several changes during the adolescence period. The changes mark the start of puberty.
The period during which adolescence reach sexual maturity and are capable of reproduction is called puberty.
