There is mass mortality of fishes in a pond. What may be the reasons?
The addition of certain compounds that degrade water quality and make it unfit for sustaining life must have resulted in mass mortality of fish in a pond. The following are possible causes of pond fish deaths:
(i). Heat: Some thermal plants release hot water directly into bodies of water, and causing the death of aquatic creatures.
(ii). Radioactive wastes: Certain industries dump radioactive elements or heavy metals such as directly into bodies of water. Fish consume these hazardous metals and absorb them. Ingestion of such poisonous metals leads them to die by disrupting their fundamental life processes.
(iii). Algal bloom: The addition of organic nutrients by increased amount of fertilisers and sewage into water body causes the growth of excessive algae (algal bloom), which further reduces the in water body and causes death of various aquatic organisms like fish, etc.
