How is soil formed?

Various physical, chemical, and biological processes break down the rocks at or near the surface over thousands to millions of years. Fine soil particles are the end result of this breakdown. There are a variety of different factors that influence soil formation. These factors are:
  • : It heats the rocks, causing them to crack and eventually break up into tiny pieces.
  • : It breaks rocks by freezing and flowing quickly.
  • : It erodes rocks in the same way as fast-moving water does. It also carries sand from one place to another in the same way that water does.
  • Living organisms: grow on the rock surface, causing the rock to powder down and produce a thin layer of soil. The roots of large trees can often get caught in cracks in the rocks, and as the roots grow larger, the crack expands.
