Immediate and contributory causes of diseases:
Immediate causes:
The actual causes that are responsible for a disease are known as immediate causes.
The immediate causes can be both infectious and non-infectious.
Example:
Bacteria, fungi, viruses, germs etc.
Contributory causes:
The causes which are not direct but factors that contribute to causing disease are known as contributory causes.
Example:
Poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle, polluted environment etc.
Congenital and acquired diseases:
The diseases which are present from birth are known as congenital diseases.
Example:
The hole in the heart of an infant is an example of congenital disease.
The diseases that occur after birth are known as acquired diseases.
Based on the causes, acquired diseases are of two types.

Infectious causes:

The extrinsic or external disease-causing factors are known as infectious causes. These causes lead to infectious diseases and can affect the whole community as they are transferable from one person to another.

Non-infectious causes:

The intrinsic or internal disease-causing factors are known as non-infectious causes. These causes lead to non-infectious diseases and do not affect the whole community as they are non-transferable from one person to another.
Infectious and non-infectious diseases:
Infectious diseases:
The diseases in which microbes are the immediate causes are known as infectious diseases.
These diseases are  brought about by extrinsic or external factors and can spread from one person to another. The transmission of these diseases  occurs through direct contact or some medium (air, water, vectors). The loss of community hygiene reduces the incidence of these infectious diseases.
Example:
Cholera, tuberculosis, pneumonia, chickenpox etc.
Non-infectious diseases:
The diseases which are not caused by pathogens and are mostly brought by intrinsic or internal factors are known as non-infectious diseases.
These diseases are not transmitted. But the genetic abnormalities are hereditary and are, transmitted from parent to offspring. In this case, community hygiene plays no role.
Example:
High blood pressure, heart diseases and cancer etc.
Important!
Different diseases have different means of spread, treatments and prevention. All these depend on various factors, like whether the immediate causes are infectious or non-infectious.
