1. What is rust? Give the equation for formation of rust.
Rust is chemically known as (it is formulated as Fe2O3.xH2O). Rusting results in the formation of scaling hydrated ferric oxide on the surface of iron and iron-containing materials.
\(4Fe + 3O_2 + xH_2O \xrightarrow[]{} 2Fe_2O_3.xH_2O\)
2. State two conditions necessary for rusting of iron.
Conditions for rusting of iron:
i. The presence of is essential for the rusting of iron.
ii. Impurities in the iron, the presence of water vapour, acids, salts and hasten to rust.
iii. Pure iron does not rust in dry and CO2 free air. It also does not rust in , free from dissolved salts.
