Human body:
The human body which comprises of cells and tissues uses water to help in regulating the temperature and maintain the other functions of the body. For the proper functioning the human body requires 2 – 3 litres of water per day on an average. Water also helps in the proper digestion of food and removal of toxins from the body.

Domestic uses:
Other than drinking water is used by people for a wide range of purposes. They are cooking, bathing, washing clothes, washing utensils, keeping houses and common places clean, watering plants, etc.
Agriculture:
In India, a majority of the farmers depend on rains for the irrigation of the crops. Water is essential for the healthy growth of f farm crops and farm stock, is also used in the manufacture of many products.
Industry:
The industries rely completely on water at all levels o production. In industries water is used as a material, a solvent and for generating electricity.
Swamps:
These are forested wetlands that occur along large rivers or on the shores of large lakes. The swamp water may be a freshwater, brackish water or seawater. Swamps serve as an important source for providing fresh water and oxygen to all the various living organisms. The Pichavaram Mangroves in Chidambaram, Muthupet mangrove wetland, Pallikkaranai wetland in Chennai, Chembarambakkam in Kancheepuram are a few examples of swamps in Tamilnadu.
Distribution of water and treatment system:
Water is distributed by the local bodies. In few areas water is obtained from the river, lake and ground water is treated first and then distributed as shown below.
