Hunting down animals for the consumption of food was prevalent during prehistoric times. The onset of civilization allowed the domestication of animals for meat consumption.
Example:
Chickens, sheep, rabbits, pigs, goats, camels, buffalos (beef), fishes, prawns, lobsters, crabs and so on are some of the meat consumed by humans.
- Animal meat is a part of the diet for most human beings.
- Due to its nutritional values, meat consumption is considered essential.
- The breeding of chicken on a large scale is known as poultry farming, and is done for economic purposes.
- Meat is a good source of protein and vitamins like vitamin A and vitamin B12.

Poultry farming:
The process of raising domesticated birds such as ducks, chicken, turkey, and geese for commercial purposes, like getting meat and eggs for food is known as poultry farming.
The rearing of poultries is done in large numbers in which chickens are the most common ones.
Based on their usage, chickens are broadly classified into two types as follows:
- Egg-laying chickens are known as layers.
- Chickens reared for meat are known as Broilers.
The following are the mandatory characteristics of a poultry farm:
- Safe and sufficient space wired cages should be available for the birds.
- We should maintain them at a well-illuminated and well-ventilated place.
- We should provide plenty of water and regular feed rich in proteins, fats and vitamins.
- We should maintain the birds under proper temperature and hygiene.
Poultry farm
The poultry feed comprises maize, wheat, rice bran, and millet in mashed form and ground nut cakes.
Diseases:
Due to certain microbes, poultry birds suffer from various diseases. Hence it is essential to keep their cages clean and frequently get the birds vaccinated against common diseases. Some of the diseases are as follows:
