Elements are classified into three categories based on their properties.

Metal:
Metal is a solid substance that is generally hard and shiny.
Some common metals:

Iron, copper, gold and silver
Non-metals:
The element that generally does not shine, neither too hard nor too soft, is called non-metal. All gases are non-metals.
Some common Non-metals:

Carbon

Sulphur
Metalloids or Semi-metals:
The chemical elements that exhibit the properties of metals and non-metals are called metalloids.
