Whenever we are tired, we say that "I'm tired, I need some rest", which means you need to give some rest to your body.
The above situation says that you should maintain the inactivity status of your body, so this inactivity is called as 'Rest'.
Similarly, in physics, we can define the rest as,
Rest:
The objects which do not change their position are said to be at rest.
Example:
1. The mobile phone lying on the table.
2. A car parked in the parking lot.
Now we understood about 'rest', and similarly, the object which is not at rest is said to be in motion.
Motion:
The objects which change their position are said to be in motion.
Example:
1. All the running vehicles we see on the road are in motion.
2. Athlete running movement is a motion.
Remember that motion is a relative phenomenon; that is, an object appearing to be in motion to one person can appear to be at rest as viewed by another person.
Example:
We can say while travelling on a train; the trees seem to be moving to the person who travels, but the person who stands near the tree sees it as static and immobile.
Now we know the 'motions' are relative, Then, let us see the classifications of the motions.
Classification of motions:
S.No | Types of motions | What it is? | Example |
1 | Linear motion | In linear motion, the object moves along in a straight line. | A car travelling on a straight road. |
2 | Circular motion | Where an object travels along in a circular path. | 1. The motion of a vehicle wheel 2. The movement of an artificial satellite orbiting the earth. |
3 | Uniform motion | When an object covers equal distance in equal intervals of time. | 1. The movement of the fan. 2. The vehicle moving on a straight road at a constant speed. 3.Movement of hands of a watch |
4 | Non uniform motion / Random motion | When an object travels along a straight line but varying in its speed is called non-uniform motion. | 1. A car coming to a halt. 2. An athlete running a 100 m race |
