Airborne disease caused by virus:
1. Disease: Common cold:
It is an infectious disease, that easily spreads from one person to another.
Causative organism: Rhinovirus (Other viruses that can cause cold include coronavirus, influenza and Adenovirus)
Mode of transmission: Droplet infectionTissues/ Organs affected: Upper respiratory tract (Inflammation of nasal chamber).
Symptoms:
- Fever
- Cough
- Running nose
- Painful throat
- Sneezing and headache
Symptoms of common cold
Treatment: There's no specific medicine to cure a common cold, but lots of drugs are used to relieve the coughing, sneezing, and stuffiness that go with it.
2. Disease: Influenza:
It is generally known as flu, and it commonly occurs in children.
Symptoms of influenza
Causative organism: Myxovirus
Mode of transmission: Droplet infection
Tissues/Organs affected: Respiratory tract (Inflammation of nasal mucosa, pharynx).
Symptoms:
- Fever
- Body pain
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Nasal discharge
- Respiratory congestion
Treatment: Antiviral drugs such as Oseltamivir, Zanamivir and Peramivir are used to treat Influenza disease.
3. Disease: Measles:
It is an infectious disease, and it is very quickly transferred from one infected person to another.
Measles
Causative organism: Rubeola Virus
Mode of transmission: Droplet infection, droplet nuclei and direct contact with the infected person.
Tissue/Organ affected: Respiratory tract
Symptoms:
- Eruption of small red spots or rashes in skin
- Cough and sneezing
- Redness of eye (Conjunctivitis)
- Pneumonia
Symptoms of measles
Treatment:
There is no specific treatment available for measles, but the condition usually improves within 7 to 10 days. Affected persons can recover from the disease by proper rest and diet.
4. Disease: Mumps:
It is a viral infection, which primarily affects saliva-producing glands that are located near the ears.
Mumps
Causative organism: Myxovirus parotidis
Mode of transmission: Droplet infection, droplet nuclei and direct contact with the infected person.
Tissue/Organ affected: Upper respiratory tract.
Symptoms:
- Fever
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Enlargement of the parotid gland
- Movement of the jaw becomes difficult
Symptoms of mumps
Treatment:
Vaccination is the best way to prevent mumps. We can prevent mumps with MMR vaccine. MMR vaccine protects against three diseases: Measles, mumps and rubella.
5. Disease: Chickenpox:
Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus, and it is most common among children and adults.
Chickenpox: Varicella-zoster virus
Causative organism: Varicella Zoster virus
Mode of transmission: Droplet infection, droplet nuclei and direct contact with an infected person.
Tissue/Organ affected: Respiratory tract
Symptoms of chicken pox
Symptoms:
- Eruptions in the body and face (in the form of blisters or spots)
- Fever
- Uneasiness
Treatment:
The affected persons are isolated for a week until blisters are crusted. An antiviral drug such as acyclovir or valacyclovir is used to minimise the chickenpox symptoms in adults.
