- Balaji Baji Rao succeeded the throne of Maratha after Baji Rao. His tenure witnessed the reduction of the position of the king to a mere nominal head. The Confederate system started by Baji Rao was further strengthened under the rule of Balaji Baji Rao.

- Balaji’s term witnessed the transformation of villages and small areas into large cities. He also made Pune his capital, replacing Satara which was his earlier capital.
NANA SAHEB: Balaji Baji Rao was also known as “Nana Saheb” during his reign.
- His period also saw the development of architecture under the Marathas and social development witnessed a huge high under him. His rule was highly centralized and all the powers were concentrated under the Peshwa.
Military under Balaji Baji Rao
- During his rule Peasants were recruited into the army who were allotted the positions in Infantry and later in Cavalry. The Soldiers from the peasant group were not allowed to cultivate their lands until they discharge their military duties.
- The large artillery forces of the Maratha were maintained by the recruited personnel from the British and the Portuguese.
ALIWARDI KHAN: He was the Nawab of Bengal who was defeated by Balaji Baji Rao in a battle that took place in the year \(1751\), with this victory nearly 1/3rd of the subcontinent came under the Maratha empire.
- He also signed an agreement with the Mughal ruler “Ahmad Shah” and promised to protect the Mughal bastions from internal and external threats.
- Balaji ordered plundering of Odisha and Bengal areas simultaneously he also kept checking on his enemies like Nisam, Telugu and Tamil’s of the Indian Sub-continent.
