In this module, we shall learn about the various preventive measures taken by both the government and individuals for safe travelling on the roads.
Government:
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is the apex agency in India for managing road construction, its maintenance and safety. The government has taken various steps to reduce the road accidents, some are;
  • Ensuring the good functioning of the traffic signals and road signs at busy crossing roads.
  • Constructing proper roads both in urban and rural areas.
  • Installation of CCTV cameras to record high-speed offences which can detect the offenders.
  • Prohibiting the act of digging or hoarding soil from roads.
  • Taking steps for the rectification of accident black spots and improvement of road engineering.
  • Remove encroachments and maintain proper pedestrian ways for ensuring road safety.
  • Stringent actions are to be taken for the violation of any road safety rules.
Individuals:
  • Each individual must be responsible while driving a vehicle. Everyone must undergo a proper training and tests to obtain a driving license. It is compulsory to have the following documents – driving license, registration certificate of the vehicle, Insurance certificate, Taxation certificate, fitness certificate and permit.
  • Servicing the vehicles at regular intervals is vital for safe travel.
  • To avoid accidents because of potholes and bad roads, users can choose to use the Raksha safe drive device.
  • The idea of Carpooling will reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Many people can use one vehicle to save fuel, money and time.
Raksha safe drive: It is a device capable of automatic crash detection, two – way call connectivity, GPS tracking, engine health monitoring and smart panic button.
Carpooling is sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car, and prevents the need for more vehicles to the same location.
