9. Reading. In the world of information and communication

  

 

Mass media play an important role in the modern world. Its primal objectives are to inform, to form public opinion, to promote, to persuade, to educate, and to entertain people. The main forms of mass media are TV, magazines and newspapers, internet media and the radio.

 

The problem is, we can’t always be sure that a certain media is covering the event honestly and without bias. Although there still enough media and reporters who have the reputation of being impartial.  The other problem is that good events rarely make headlines. Modern people are drowning in a torrent of bad news. Media these days seem to focus specifically on crimes, scandals and disasters. It contributes to anxiety people feel on a daily basis and makes them more stressed.

 

Another issue is that on the one hand some journalists tend to violate privacy of people, especially celebrities, on the other — they give themselves carte blanche to write anything they want. Internet has become the dominant type of mass media nowadays, though TV is still very popular. The advantage of the Internet is that it reacts swiftly to all the changes and events in the modern world.
