Changes in body shape and appearance:
When puberty starts, there are rapid changes developed in body shape and appearance. In boys, generally, there is broadening of the shoulders and chest, and muscles present in the body increase (boys become muscular) due to the growth.

While in girls, the hip and the region below the waist becomes wider. The changes that are present in boys and girls are thus different in their adolescence.
Changes in voice:
Voice is produced by the voice box present in our throat. The larynx or the voice box develops and grows in boys as the puberty sets in. Thus a change in voice is accomplished in boys as puberty sets in.

Important!
The growth of voice box in boys becomes much more than the growth of the voice box in girls.
Thus the voice box becomes bigger in boys, which gives a deeper and a low pitched voice. The growing voice box is seen as the protruding or enlarged part present in the throat that is called as Adam’s apple.

In boys, the muscles present in the growing voice box can go out of control, and due to this, the voice becomes hoarse. The boys experience a hoarse voice due to the changes in the larynx. The hoarseness in the voice may remain for a few days to a week after which the voice turns normal.

The larynx in the girls is not visible due to the smaller size.
Girls have a high pitched voice while the boys have a deep and hoarse voice.
Increased sweat and oil production in skin
Pimples are red spots that appear on a person's face. Acne is a condition which cause eruption of many pimples. Sebaceous glands are small glands (exocrine glands) that secrete oil through the skin pores to protect the skin surface. The sweat glands secrete sweat that regulates human body temperature.

During puberty, there is an increase in the secretion of sweat glands and sebaceous glands (oil glands). This cause acne and pimples in the face of the boys and girls.
Important!
Glands like sebaceous glands, sweat glands and salivary glands release the secretions through ducts. Endocrine glands release hormones directly into the blood and thus termed ductless gland.
Development of sex organs:
By the time of puberty, the reproductive organs present in boys and girls are developed completely. In males, the sex organs like the penis and testis would have completely developed.
  • The testes begin to produce the sperms.
  • The ovaries enlarge and starts to release the matured egg, and menstruation starts.
Mental, emotional and intellectual maturity:
Adolescence is also a period which brings maturity that causes a change in the way a person thinks. Adolescents become more independent and self-conscious as they attain mental maturity. During adolescence, the intellectual development takes place and adolescents start reasoning and understand things. During this age, the brain has the maximum learning capacity.

In adolescence, the girls and boys may get into insecurities and emotional mood swings when adjusting the changes in the body as well as in mind. However, adolescents should understand that all the changes are entirely normal and is a part of growing.
